I was 100 pages in and I was ready to just read the wikipedia synopsis. The writing is intentionally disjointed and it feels like there's barely enough time to care about a character before the next page is about another character you don't know anything about either. It takes time to care about any characters, if at all.
Then in Part Two, the book got better or I got used to it. Mandel does a good job of exploring the paths not taken with her characters, something I personally do a lot of. If I turned left instead of right, spoke up instead of staying quiet. Whether it's regret or daydreaming, the characters journeys all end up where their choices lead them.
Another thing I like about Mandel's books is the interconnect that characters and events have on each other's lives. People's choices have ripple effects, whether through intention or accident, and the choices we make in response to these things can lead us to new beginnings or disaster.
I look forward to reading more of the Mandelverse. I think I will read a few other books to help put some distance between Glass Hotel and when I attempt Sea of Tranquility.
